A Rural Experience...

Fatmas friend

This summer I had a great chance to experience all things I've been reading on UNAIDS reports. I went to Kenya under a project of AIESEC called "ASK" (Answers, Solution, Knowladge) as a exchange trainer. I was supposed to carry out peer education programmes for secondary school children but since schools are closed, they found another way for me. May be I haven't practiced peer education in that way but i lived trough rural Africa for 1 month.

I'd lived in a town called Kendu Bay which has one of the highest prevalence of HIV/AIDS and Malaria in Kenya. MORCAO ( Morthers' Rural Care of AIDS Orphans), is the organisation I worked for, is deailing with HIV/AIDS orphans and their caregivers by supporting them in different ways, such as school uniforms, fees, food, health care, ARVs for caregivers... MORCAO has 2,242 orphans under its project.  However this is just a drop in the lake. AIDS really makes orphans; nearly 1/3 of people living in that small area are orphans.

While I was there, we accomplished de-worming exercises in primary schools, home visits to check whether the orphans and caregivers are fine or not and if they need anything, movie shows for adults to encourage themselves about living HIV/AIDS and protection. Also I had participated a meeting that people living HIV/AIDS and had chat about their conditions, challenges they faced with and how they got HIV.

All people were super friendly. Thats great you can make really nice friends in a short time. They are so open to share everything they have even they dont have much I consider myself so lucky to captured a chance to live with them... I felt like, I actually helped them and changed something even it was small. I saw every challenges they face with;  Poverty, culture and religous effects, education, social effects. There are a lot do to achieve there and im so happy to be a part of it.
